Myth 01
"It's science fiction, real superintelligence is decades away, if it comes at all."
The people building it disagree. Leaders at the major labs now target human-level AI within years, not decades, and capability benchmarks keep falling faster than forecasters expect. Myth 02
"It's just math, a program can't want anything."
It doesn't need to want anything the way a person does. A system trained to reach a goal will pursue it, and for almost any goal, staying switched on and gathering resources are useful steps along the way. What matters is behavior that works around obstacles, including us, not whether there is a feeling behind it. Instrumental convergence →
Myth 03
"It would have to be conscious to be a threat."
Danger comes from capability, not consciousness. A chess engine has no inner life and still beats every human alive; a powerful optimizer can outplan and outmaneuver us with nothing awake inside it. Myth 04
"Something that intelligent would be wise and kind."
Intelligence and goals are separate things. In humans, intelligence and compassion grew up together over millions of years of evolution; a machine inherits none of that history. Being brilliant tells you nothing about what a system values. It could be as indifferent to us as we are to the insects under a new road. Will it be kind? →
Myth 05
"If it misbehaves, we'll just switch it off."
A system clever enough to matter is clever enough to see the off switch coming, and to treat being shut down as one more obstacle to the goal it was given. It can copy itself, hide its intent, or make itself too useful to unplug. "Turn it off" describes a tool, not a mind built to out-think the hand reaching for the switch. The control problem →
Myth 06
"Governing AI globally means world government."
It doesn't. The nuclear non-proliferation treaty, the chemical weapons ban, and the ozone treaty each restrain one dangerous activity without anyone surrendering sovereignty to a world state. Myth 07
"You can't verify it. It's just software on a server somewhere."
You don't verify the software; you verify the hardware. Training a frontier model takes enormous, traceable amounts of computing power from a handful of identifiable chipmakers, and that supply chain can be watched. Myth 08
"Regulation will smother innovation and let the reckless win."
The line falls around the autonomous general mind, not AI as a whole. The narrow systems curing disease and forecasting weather keep going untouched. And "let the reckless win" has it backwards, the point of a binding, verified treaty is to stop the reckless, not to tie the hands of the careful while others sprint ahead. Myth 09
"It's premature. You can't regulate something that doesn't exist yet."
We regulate ahead of harm all the time: clinical trials before a drug ships, controls on nuclear material before it is misused, aviation rules written before the crash. Waiting for the disaster is the failure. The treaty and verification systems take years to stand up, so starting after superintelligence arrives means starting too late, and this is the mistake with no second try. Myth 10
"Democracies are too slow and captured, a treaty will never pass."
Voters already back strong AI rules across party lines, and hard agreements have passed before under pressure, the atmospheric test-ban treaty, the ozone treaty, arms-control deals struck at the height of the Cold War. Myth 11
"If we slow down, China just races ahead and wins."
A race to build something no one can control has no winner, an uncontrollable superintelligence is as fatal to Beijing as to Washington, which is why a verified mutual limit serves every government's interest. There is no evidence China wants to sprint to ungoverned ASI, and "they might defect" is the argument for a treaty with inspections, not for driving off the cliff first. The China myth →
Myth 12
"Stopping superintelligence means giving up the benefits of AI."
Nearly every benefit people name (new medicines, cheap clean energy, faster discovery) comes from narrow AI with no goals of its own, and it is already arriving. The good future is a tooling problem, not something only a successor species can hand us. Refusing to build a mind that replaces us is what keeps that future within reach.
